GAC Youth Mentorship Program 21-22

Our project is completely non-profit in nature and does not generate any revenue.

Art should not be intimidating or distant for anyone. But how can you feel close to art if you never had a chance to truly embrace it? Unfortunately, art education has never been a priority for public education in Hong Kong, and what is taught is not in depth enough to prepare students for a career in the creative industry after graduation.

As subtle and soft art may appear, it possesses a power strong enough to build a cultural identity and stimulate public discussion. Art also supports creativity and diversity by nature, which we believe that it is a vital lifeforce and the source of a community's soft power. GAC hopes to contribute to the building process of reinforcing Hong Kong's soft power to become the true hub of art in Asia that it had long aspired to be.

We aim to start by bringing art close and accessible to the local students in Hong Kong, therefore we are hosting our first Youth Mentorship Program to sponsor students in pursuing their dream in art.

Program Overview

Objective: To offer the public secondary school students an opportunity to be mentored by a local artist to curate, design, execute, and exhibit an art project that is exploratory, creative, and participatory.

Details: 5-8 selected students from the participating school will have direct engagement and mentorship sessions with one local artist (“Mentor”) to complete an art project. The format of engagement is flexible, depending on Mentor’s suggestions and Participating School’s preferences. It could be consultation sessions, workshops, or field trips. Concrete plans and arrangements will be discussed with each Participating School.

The projects will take place during December 2021 to April 2022. There will be a roaming exhibition of the projects in the participating schools, and GAC will also publish a book to document the project.

No fee is required of the Participating School. GAC will subsidize the students to execute the project, and the program will also be partially sponsored by the iCare Social Enterprise Scheme of Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Luke Ching

(Chin Wai)

Luke CHING Chin Wai (b.1972, Hong Kong) received his MA in Fine Arts in The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Broadly acknowledged as one of the most active conceptual artists in Hong Kong, CHING twists the roles of artist and observer within and beyond the city. Participated exhibitions include solo exhibition “Liquefied Sunshine” (Blindspot Gallery, Hong Kong, 2019), “For Now We See Through a Window” (Gallery EXIT, Hong Kong, 2016), “Folk Art Series” (Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery, Blackburn, UK, 2008), group exhibition “Dismantling the Scaffold” (Tai Kwun Contermporary, Hong Kong, 2018), “Imagine Border” (Gwangju Biennale, Gwangju, Korea, 2018), Residency program Fukuoka Asian Art Museum Resience Program (Japan, 2006) and P.S.1 Contemporary Arts Center Studio Program (New York, 2000).

Ricky Yeung

(Sau Churk)

Ricky Yeung Sau Churk is an artist and art educator who conducts community arts projects for diverse audiences to cultivate an appreciation for the city of Hong Kong. Yeung’s works have been shown at the City University of Hong Kong, Fringe Club, Hong Kong Arts Centre, Hong Kong Museum of Arts, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, Para Site, Sha Tin Town Hall, and the University of Hong Kong. He is the recipient of the 2007 Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence (Arts Education). Community engagement is central to his practice, which includes his role as chair of Video Power (1999–2002), committee member of Curriculum Development (Visual Art) Education Bureau (2004–2013), chair of Center of Community Cultural Development (2010–currently) and committee member of Society of Indigenous Learning (2013–currently). Yeung has been an art education columnist with Sunday Mingpao since 2009.

Kingsley

Kingsley Ng is an interdisciplinary artist and designer with a focus on conceptual, site-specific and participatory projects. His creative practices are driven by a belief that art can be socially relevant and transformative. His recent projects include Twenty-Five Minutes Older, a commission by Art Basel which takes the audience on a camera obscura moving tram, and After the Deluge, presented in an underground storm-water tank the size of 40 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Kingsley Ng holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in New Media from Ryerson University, Canada; a Master of Science degree in Sustainable Design from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland; and Post-diplôme avec les félicitations du jury à l’unanimité (Master of Fine Arts degree equivalent) from Le Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporains, France. He has served as an Assistant Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University since 2015.

Michelle Fung

(Kuen Suet)

Michelle Kuen Suet Fung is a visual artist and art educator whose ambitious ongoing oeuvre revolves around a grand narrative of a dystopian world set in the year 2084. Her exhibition Polluta, Floating Artist Colony in the Sky (2019) at Firstdraft, Sydney, Australia was the first by a Hong Kong artist at the oldest artist-run gallery in the country. Her recent exhibition Polluta, Floating Artist Colony in the Sky (2018) at Pro Arts Gallery in Oakland, California, USA, was the non-profit gallery’s first show by a Hong Kong artist and one of the most successful in its forty-year history. Her award-winning book Tin Hung Gaau Jy 天空膠雨 (Joint Publishing, 2017) tells a cautionary dystopian tale of a future where a frenzy of plastic consumption has led humans past the point of no return. Her work Plastic, plastic, every where! received the Grotto Award, Hong Kong Baptist University (2015) and Award of Excellence, Fourth Greater China Illustration Awards (2016).

On 18 Dec 2021, we officially launched the Program and invited the participating school students to attend the sharing session by our four mentors. The mentors shared their experience and knowledge to inspire the students to come up with their own art projects, and we are now looking forward to receiving the students' project proposals!
